Yes, as the title says, it is hard for me to say. Our winter sled season has come to an end. I'm sorry that I didn't post after the race, but I was hoping for pictures from the race and the official results. We only made it to the 2 races for the season, one dryland and one snow one. So here is the recap on the Wausua race.
This race was going to be a tricky one. I had Solo/Ensemble in Green Bay and then I had to rush to Wausua, a 2 hr drive to make it to my start time. I had my Solo at 8:08 am and then my start time for the race at 10:52 am. Man, call that close! Yes, we did make it to my start chute time on time. I actually had 20 minutes to spare, but that was running around looking for my bib and getting the dogs harnessed and ready to go. The dogs did great, for traveling for about 2 1/2 hrs. Yes, the dogs had to go from my Uncle's house to Green Bay. Thus, making it a longer trip.
On the first day, we were the last team out. 23rd out of 23rd. Not bad, we were behind 2 slower teams, and we ended up passing them both. The dogs, well actually mostly Dingo was dipping a lot. That is where a dog goes and tries to pick up snow to get water. Also, on day 1 I ran Katie's sled. Now, my sled was with us but I wanted to use Katie's for the safety of the dogs. Katie's sled has a drag brake and a steel claw brake where my sled just has a wooden claw brake. Try slowing down a team with just that, it's pretty hard. The other thing was I needed to be really carefully with Katie's sled. Her sled had a broken runner so for the majority of the race I was holding it just right so we didn't run on the broken part. That slowed us down a bit that day too. Day 1's time was 20:23.28, putting me in 21st place.
Day 2 started out better. We arrived with a whole 1/2 hr before I went out. I watered the dogs, let them stretch and got them ready to go. I was able to watch the 3 dog sled and 2 dog skijoring go out before the 4 dog class. We did so much better Sunday. I borrowed a sled from another musher and used it for that day. and Man, was that sled every so much lighter. I had to make a decision and hope that Dingo wouldn't slow the team down that day by dipping or stick her in wheel and have her dip on the run. I ended up leaving Dingo in lead, for not risking any behavior issues by Rocket. We ran a faster time by 2 minutes, passed 2 teams near the finish line and ended up going from 21st place to 19th! I am so proud of my dogs! They did beautiful for there first snow race and race season all running together at a race!
